A Luxury Equine Family Photoshoot in Oxfordshire | Millie Mahoney & Bamba

There are few things more special than welcoming your horse home (literally, like into your garden!) - not for training or rehab, but simply to celebrate their very existence in the family.

When booking in Oxfordshire event rider Millie Mahoney, we agreed we'd push the boat out and create a bespoke equine lifestyle photography experience featuring her exceptional event horse, Greenlanes Le Bambalou - affectionately known to the Mahoney's as Bamba.

As a British Eventing rider who has successfully competed up to 2-star level, Millie has excitingly recently acquired Bamba for the next stage of her eventing career. At ten years old, this striking British-bred bay gelding (by the legendary Balou du Rouet) is not only a talented and capable competition horse, but a real VIP member of the family!

Rather than photographing them at an event or competition venue, we chose somewhere far more meaningful - the Mahoney family home in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.

The infamous bench...

Bringing Bamba Home

Dedication is one trait event riders are not short of. Thanks to Millie's amazing mum, Ally, ensuring that every cog in the wheel of the day kept turning smoothly, Bamba was transported home especially for the occasion.

Like so many equestrian families, they had always dreamed of seeing their horses standing proudly in the garden at home. Where there is a will, there is a way as this childhood dream was brought to life especially for our shoot! Watching Bamba grazing peacefully amongst the flowers in their garden with the rolling Oxfordshire hills stretching into the distance, we were pleasantly surprised with just how well behaved he was. Whilst Bamba is a seasoned pro when it comes to travelling to new places, fit competition horses are of course often sharp brained too. Our concerns were soon put to bed as he meandered off the trailer like a lamb, had a little look around the garden and then proceeded to take the next few hours in his stride. The setting created the most breathtaking backdrop for timeless equine family portraits. It perfectly reflected the tiny day-to-day occurrences that often mean the most - the ones away from the competition scene.

A Photoshoot for the Whole Family

One of the things I love most about equine lifestyle photography is that it isn't just about the rider. The horses we love become woven into the story of an entire family - horses, as we all know, are a way of life. They impact everybody in the family either directly or indirectly. With this in mind, Millie's mum and dad joined us throughout the shoot, along with her sister Georgia who happily admits she's "the non-horsey one" of the family. Their gorgeous black Labrador, Luna - who also happens to be an accomplished gundog - also made several appearances (I think she thought we were actually all there for her!).

Some of my favourite images from the day are those that capture everyone together - even if we did have a little mishap with a garden bench! Years from now, they won't only remember Bamba's competition days; they'll remember this chapter of family life in this home of theirs, with their special Willow tree in the back garden and Bamba as a horse who brought them all together. And also perhaps the moment that Hugo, Millie's dad, almost ended up falling through the weathered wooden bench taking everybody with him!

Elegant Country Style

Millie's wardrobe was effortlessly elegant and perfectly suited to the setting - she looked like she'd walked straight out of the pages of Vogue. One of my favourite looks featured a stunning Holland Cooper tweed suit, it complemented both the traditional English country garden and Bamba's rich bay colouring beautifully. The timeless styling elevated the entire collection of photographs that are fit for the wall for the next 40 years! For clients investing in bespoke artwork, thoughtful wardrobe choices can make an enormous difference to the finished gallery, and Millie's styling was a perfect example of this.

More than competition photographs

Competitive riders often have thousands of action photographs documenting their achievements. What they often are short of are beautiful, intentional portraits that celebrate the relationship in between every dressage test, cross-country or showjumping round. Long after the competition days have passed, these portraits become the photographs that families treasure most. They tell the story of a very special lifestyle - a partnership, dedication and home.

Hello, my name is Holly...

Welcome to my blog

I am an equine photographer based in Essex, England. I've owned and ridden horses always, and I've never known a life without them! I've started this little blog for my many ramblings. I've always liked to write, but previously had no outlet for it - now I do! I write about all my photography adventures, horses and dogs so if you like any of those things, you're in the right place! Maybe we'll even get to work together some day...
