Many of us reading this will identify with the strength and nostalgia of our pony specifically from our teenage years. As a luxury equine photographer in Hertfordshire, I have the privilege of capturing these precious connections, preserving memories that families will treasure for generations. This time it was Orla and Indie's turn.

Recently, I spent a wonderful afternoon photographing Orla and her beautiful bay Welsh pony, Indie, at the prestigious Millie McBride Dressage yard in Hertfordshire. Their equine photoshoot was a perfect example of why professional equine photography is about so much more than beautiful images... it's about celebrating the unique journey between horse and rider.

A Special Bond Photographed

Like many teenagers who grow up around horses, much of Orla's life revolves around her pony. From visits to the yard and weekend rides, to quiet moments spent grooming and caring for Indie during her rehab. Their special friendship will eventually become an important core memory for Orla when she is a grown up, so to be entrusted with the job of capturing this phase of her life is an honour. As an equine portrait photographer, these relationships are always my favourite stories to document. The trust, affection and understanding between horse and rider create photographs filled with adoration and emotion.

Located in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, purpose built Millie McBride Dressage provides an exceptional setting for luxury equine photography. The build was completed in 2023 and is home for many liveries from all over Hertfordshire and London.

The immaculate facilities, elegant surroundings and peaceful atmosphere offered the perfect backdrop for Orla and Indie's equine portrait session. Every corner of the yard reflected the high standards and dedication that makes an equestrian facility like this one so special.

Orla's bespoke equine portrait experience included a pre-session consultation, a luxury horse and rider photoshoot at Millie McBride Dressage and a private cinematic viewing appointment at Sopwell House, where she and her lovely mum Lisa selected their favourite portraits to be displayed as beautiful artwork within their home.

One of the most important aspects of my equine lifestyle photography sessions is creating a relaxed experience for both horse and owner.

Rather than relying heavily on perfectly posed photographs, I encourage clients to spend time with their horse naturally incorporating movement to make things more comfortable and manageable. Some of the most meaningful images from Orla and Indie's equine portrait session came from simple everyday interactions - a little neck hug, a polo as a tactful bribe to keep Indie sweet!

As part of my bespoke equine photography experience, clients have the opportunity to view their images in a relaxed and luxurious setting allowing them to fully appreciate the emotion and detail captured throughout their session. Set within one of Hertfordshire's most prestigious country house hotels, Sopwell House provided the perfect environment to relive the special moments shared between Orla and Indie.

During the viewing appointment, we carefully explored the collection of portraits together, selecting favourite images and discussing how they could be transformed into beautiful wall art and fine art pieces for the family home. Seeing the finished photographs for the first time is often one of the most emotional parts of the entire experience, as clients are able to reflect on the unique relationship they share with their horse or pony.
