Winter Equine Photoshoot Portrait Styling for Equestrian Families with Horses at Home

How to create timeless, elegant portraits during the most atmospheric season of the year

Winter in the British countryside has its own quiet kind of magic. The soft grey skies, the gentle stillness when it's crisp. It all creates an atmosphere that’s wonderfully suited to equine family portraits. Whilst many families imagine spring or summer for their session, winter offers something more understated, authentic and, quite often, far more beautiful.

If you’re planning a session at your yard or home this winter, here are some style notes and ideas to help you feel prepared, inspired and reassured.

Embrace Traditional British Winter Style

Winter clothing naturally lends itself to a timeless look. Think tweed coats, wool knits, wax jackets and rich, earthy tones. All the classics you already love and likely own - perfect! Deep greens, chocolate browns, soft creams, burgundy, navy… these tones sit regally and beautifully against winter landscapes.

Textures add a lovely sense of warmth in photographs. A layer of cashmere beneath a tailored coat, or a subtly patterned scarf brings depth without overwhelming the overall picture. It’s all about understated elegance, not perfection.

A Cohesive Look Without Matching

You don’t need to “match” as a family - in fact, it’s better if you don’t.

Choose a simple colour palette and let each person interpret it their own way. Neutral, earthy shades always photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connections with each other and your ponies.

Children in knits, wellies and well-loved outdoor layers, parents in classic countryside staples… it all comes together naturally.

And please don’t feel the need to purchase anything new. Your everyday country winter wardrobe is likely exactly what we need. Maybe just hose off the Chammys first...

Styling Ponies & Horses for Winter

Ponies in their winter fluff are utterly charming. A winter coat, a fuzzy face and forelock are all part of their personality; they are not flaws to hide. A thorough groom, a tidy mane and a clean leather cavesson bridle are all that’s required. Their natural winter look matches the season as it should.

Your Yard Makes the Perfect Backdrop

Winter brings out the beauty in places you may walk past every day. A long driveway embellished by frost, the shelter of an old stone wall, a woodland edge, a barn with warm brick tones - all of these spaces become atmospheric on a winter’s day.

Overcast skies act as nature’s softbox giving a flattering, even light that suits both people and horses. We don’t need sunshine for beautiful images. In fact, winter light is often far kinder.

A Season for Warmth, Connection and Legacy

Winter portraits have a sincerity that’s hard to replicate in any other season.

There’s something special about capturing children wrapped up in their cosy coats, families gathered close, ponies with fuzzy ears. The essence of country life exactly as it should be.

If you’d like help selecting outfits or planning your session, I’m always here with gentle guidance. Together, we’ll create timeless heirloom portraits that feel completely at home on your walls for years to come.

Hello, my name is Holly...

Welcome to my blog

I am an equine photographer based in Essex, England. I've owned and ridden horses always, and I've never known a life without them! I've started this little blog for my many ramblings. I've always liked to write, but previously had no outlet for it - now I do! I write about all my photography adventures, horses and dogs so if you like any of those things, you're in the right place! Maybe we'll even get to work together some day...
